“I can’t eat healthy. It makes me sick”. Tears filled her eyes when she said that. One of the acquaintances I know said this to me when I talked to her passionately about adding whole foods in our diet

If I eat kale or any greens I will be in the bathroom the whole day”, said another friend of mine.

“If I eat nuts my skin breaks out. ” And that’s me.

So the vegetables, greens, nuts and whole wheat, even if they are touted as healthy can make a person sick. All the above reactions are genuine and I see in them a sincere desire to change. One person’s provision can be another person’s poison! Does this mean we can’t eat what makes us sick? Let’s look at a few groups of foods and what creates the problem and how we can possibly fix the issue.

Fruits, Vegetables, and Greens: Diarrhea, bloating and gas are some of the common problems when you start eating vegetables and greens. Whole grains also mess up the digestive system initially. This is all because of the high fiber content in them and body getting overwhelmed. Also, many of these foods belong to the category of FODMAP. The best way to introduce these foods is to add them gradually preferably in the cooked form rather than raw vegetables and fruits. Also instead of making salads as the main dish make them as a side dish if you are unable to tolerate them. Try experimenting with low FODMAP foods that are more tolerable for people suffering from IBS. Your microflora is different so give the body some time to change it.

Nuts, Gluten, etc. due to food sensitivities: I used to have gluten sensitivity, but they are gone now thanks to a gut healing protocol I worked on in the past. I am still intolerant to nuts. Leaky gut is a real issue (not recognized and treated by conventional medicine) due to our poor eating habits. The gut lining gets too porous, and this causes food particles to leak into the blood stream. The foreign particles entering the blood can cause an autoimmune response in the body including inflammatory and allergic reactions such as migraines, IBS, skin problems especially eczema and acne, chronic fatigue, food allergies, rheumatoid arthritis and more. Stopping acid blockers like proton pump inhibitors (PPI) sold under brand names like Prevacid, Nexium and Prilosec and H2 blockers like Zantac or Pepcid with the supervision of doctors is a major step to treating this condition as there are many studies that show that reducing acid in your stomach creates more undigested food and bacterial overgrowth. Just one of these PPP pills is capable of reducing stomach acid secretion by 90 to 95 percent for the better part of a day.  With clean eating habits and help from healing bone broths and supplements, there is hope to resolve this undesirable situation. Eliminating the foods that create the problem for some time is also essential. You may have to consider an elimination diet to figure out your food allergens.

Healthy foods in general: You may have heard about your body detoxifying and trying to eliminate all the toxins you accumulated, but I will not be talking about it as many health experts do not believe in it. If you experience tiredness, headaches, bad mood due to eating clean, those are the withdrawal symptoms. If you are used to eating high sugar foods and foods high in casein like cheese and other processed foods high in sodium they used to give you instant energy. They also trigger the release of “feel-good” neurotransmitters, specifically dopamine. But after a while your blood sugar drops but then you used to again reach out to more of it to feel good. Clean foods won’t give you that immediate boost but rather sustained energy for a longer period of time. Drink lots of water and get enough sleep to overcome this issue.
